About the artists
BIT SHIFTER
Bit Shifter explores high-energy, low-bit music composed and performed on a Nintendo Game Boy. The result is an unapologetically fun foray into an evocative and distinctive soundset traditionally reserved for video game sound effects and background music, all done on a console generally misperceived as being technically limited. Based in New York City, Bit Shifter seeks to adopt and subvert the playfulness inherent in the familiar Game Boy soundset, and to repurpose it into the service of novel idioms. (www.bit.shifter.net)
KATE SIMKO
Kate Simko blurs the line between musical boundaries. Moving from a solid classical training to jazz, electronics and beyond, Kates music possesses a unique harmonic, structural and spatial depth. Moody, melodic and minimal, her live techno set bridges the gap between club music and headphone listening. (www.katesimko.com)
BETA
Beta is James Coddington, a member of Equulei--a multi-city collaborative project dedicated to the spread and proliferation of post-modern electronic music. By day, James works on motion graphics, by night he works on his own videos and music, and every few months he organizes multi-media events showcasing the works of talented underground artists. "Warsport Mix 2" combines the energy of a Coddington-produced event with the sheer love of technologically-innovative sounds. (www.soaringbrain.com)
QUANTAZELLE
Busy with multiple endeavors that push this workaholic to the limit (including managing this very website), Liz McLean Knight still manages to find time to work on tracks. "Digital Love" is a "Quant-ized" cover of the song by Daft Punk that appeared on the Discovery album of 2001. (www.quantazelle.com> | www.lizrevision.com)
PROTMAN
"Protman makes music," the websites and CDRs of Joe Hahn straightforwardly proclaim. Simplicity, directness, and humor are at the heart of Joe's music, enabled mainly by his retro-videogame-sequencing software (Impulse Tracker), his love of vintage, bizarre vinyl he finds for a few dollars at the record shop down the street from his apartment, and his programming genius. (www.protman.com)
JOHNNY SQUARE
Detroit-native and Chicago-resident, Anthony Koerber creates dense beat constructions, layered melodies, and a near-pop-structure sensibility permeate most of his work, along with occasional distorted, languid vocals and 8-bit Gameboy-composed moments. (www.squareproduct.com)
PHYLUM SINTER
Phylum Sinter is the pseudonym of 25-year-old Chris Todd, a Detroit-area native currently living in the outskirts of the city. He has been making music for as long as he's been able to read/write [4-5 days]. (phylumsinter.matterwave.net)
MILES TILMANN
Often compared to Boards of Canada, Miles' music is mainly melodic ambient with forays into beat-ier realms. "Slither" is one of these--it's a downtempo, crunchy yet moody composition. Miles has two albums scheduled for release on the Consumers' Research label, and he also is the programmer behind the excellent Flash-based pixel game, Gamma Bros.(www.webhole.com)
SI-CUT.DB
London-based SI-CUT.DB (pronounced 'Sye Kut Dee Bee'), aka Douglas Benford, has had many recorded releases under many guises, covering electronica/drum n' bass/ambient, and then into microsound, glitch and dub...as SI-CUT.DB Douglas also runs and plays at the SPRAWL club, based in London, and it's label SPRAWL IMPRINT. (www.douglasbenford.co.uk/)
NULLSLEEP
Nullsleep uses Game Boys and NES consoles to create conceptually unique music that blends subversive hardware hacking with powerful melodic pop. Constantly striving for new ways to force the most out of yesterday’s machines — his music embodies an unparalleled romantic chiptune intensity. Whether thrashing away on a keyboard hooked up to a Game Boy like an electric guitar or rocking hacked NES cartridges, Nullsleep consistently demonstrates his passion for pushing the limits of both the hardware and the heart. (www.nullsleep.com)
MARSHALL WATSON
Known for his affecting electronic compositions that carelessly weave strands of Cologne-style dub-techno, minimal house, avant-pop and shoegaze sensibilities, Marshall "Shane" Watson delivers a signature beautiful, emotional, and pristine track with "Apart It Means Nothing." Shane is based in Seattle, Washington.
PRAVEEN
"Praveen's music is like a punch to the heart," writes one fan. Through the electro-acoustic portrayals of melancholic sighs, his music mixes electronica, glitch, pop, folk and ambient into a potent blend of sentimentality. Praveen also runs the Percussionlab site. (www.praveensharma.com)
"The Information Chase" was originally released February 2006 as part of the downloadable _Information
Chase_ mp3 EP on 8bitpeoples. "CSdrummer" was originally released in 2005 on the Modsquare downloadable compilation, Ctrl-N.
